The Petaluma City Council voted to seek legal protection for homeowners faced with foreclosures and evictions. In the letter to California Attorney General, Kamala Harris, Mayor David Glass writes, “To protect homeowners from losing their homes to mortgage fraud, the Petaluma City Council, by unanimous vote of the Council Members present at the December 19, 2011, City Council meeting, asks that the Attorney General’s office work with the Governor, legislature and courts to 1) temporarily stay auction proceedings and 2) temporarily suspend California Government Code section 26608, which requires County sheriffs to serve all process and notices related to foreclosures and evictions, with respect to mortgages involving banks or other financial institutions that have a track record of engaging in…unfair and deceptive practices in violation of California law.”
In addition, the council is seeking damages for the city’s loss of more than $1 million in property tax revenue.
