Occupy Petaluma is …

Occupy Petaluma

Occupy Petaluma was begun to support Occupy Wall Street, a leaderful resistance movement with people of many colors, genders and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99% that will no longer tolerate greed and corruption.

“Occupy Petaluma is committed to non-violence.  We do not condone the use of any form of violence in our common struggle for radical change of an unjust and violent system that perpetuates war and economic inequality.  We believe that our means and end must be in harmony, and for this reason, we are committed to the principles and practices of consensus, justice, non-violence and compassion. “  (This statement was adopted by the Occupy Petaluma General Assembly on November 2, 2011.)

Be sure to check Occupy Petaluma Facebook Page and “Like” us so you can get updates on your FB Wall.

Occupy Petaluma is an action network of concerned individuals who are joined by the desire to restore financial and social justice for the 99%. We are working to take Main Street back from Washington and Wall Street.

Every human being is welcomed and respected, no exceptions.
Please join us and become an activist, not just an observer (and future victim of an increasingly corrupted system). Together we are making a powerful difference and working to shape a brighter future.

The central engine of our action network is the General Assembly (GA).
The GA is the only authority as there are is no hierarchy of leaders. People lead by example and passion. We are all equals and all represented by our personal involvement. Only actions approved by the GA are deemed Occupy Petaluma actions.

In the interest of conducting a functional direct democracy, we do have rules and codes of behavior that revolve around respect, inclusion and non-violence. Those who come to participate, observe or learn are included. Those who come to attack us or undermine our actions are respectfully treated through conflict resolution techniques.

In addition to the GA there are Committees, Campaign and Working Groups.
This is where the real work is done. In Petaluma, we are currently focusing on election reform (separation of corporations and state) through our ‘Occupy Democracy Campaign.’ We are also in the process of launching our ‘Fukushima Future Campaign’ and a ‘Student Debt Crisis Campaign.’

How to get involved:

We encourage everyone to see first-hand the work we do as the media do not convey the full experience.

  • Come and join a GA, Committee, Campaign or Working Group to make a difference (schedule here),
  • You can also join the discussions we are having at our online forum here.
  • If you would like to contact one of our organizers click on the Connect tab above or: http://www.occupypetaluma.com/connect/contact/

Direct democracy in action is a mysterious and amazing experience–and you make it happen only by participating!

  1. I’m in full support. 100% of the 99%, as it were! Liz

  2. Way to go Liz; the People need to occupy the Whole economy, in every city and Town.

  3. Good way to meet people and figure out what to do next…

  4. Thank you for organizing Occupy Petaluma; I look forward to joining you in person for the next show of support. Are folks staying at Penry Park?

    • Yep. We have a 24/7 presence and occupation! Drop by at any hour and someone will be having an impassioned discussion.

General Assembly is every day at 6pm but we encourage you to come at 5-5:30 to show your signs at the corner of Pet Blvd and Washington!

  5. my husband and i will be moving to petaluma soon. this is just another great reason for us to live there and become part of it’s community. keep up the good work! we support the cause 100%

    • Colleen,
If you plan to move to Petaluma soon, you should know there are plans to build roughly 800,000+ square feet of Bigbox shopping centers in town. Just another way for the corporate oligarchies to control land-use and our local economies. Just saying, You might want to reconsider moving to Petaluma, it’s going to change. And, I’m afraid, not for the better.

    • Hope you’ve avoided buying one of the new homes at Quarry Heights. I recently heard KB homes is telling people that that Dutra Asphalt plant approved to be build just across the freeway is “temporary.” It definitely is not. Check out Petaluma 360 for all the controversy around that plant.

Regardless, DO come join us at Occupy Petaluma, affectionately know as “Camp Opie.”

  6. Hurray for the Occupy Movement and THANK YOU to the local organizers who did the planning and negotiating to establish Occupy Petaluma at Penry Park right here in River City. I was so glad to be there Saturday. We/You are the 99%. And you could also say, We are the world.

  7. Thank you to whomever put Occupy Petaluma together. I hope it gathers stream and grows bigger smarter and stronger and awakens the citizens throughout the land.

  8. Great going, Petaluma! Tony, I know your signs are appreciated. Being out there on street corners alone, you’re really to be admired. I hope you are an inspiration and that many, many people join you.

  9. This isn’t politics in the usual sense of the world, this is bigger than that. It is the building of a place for people to come together; to begin putting passion into action, to really claim the direction our lives are taking. It isn’t just a bunch of people sitting around celebrating their right to protest, it is a community representative of a larger one, finding ways to actively care about our future, and that of others.

  10. Mark. This is not Occupy Oakland. You’ll find Occupy Oakland here: http://occupyoakland.org/ Take up your rant with them.
